Insurance

Everyone is responsible for their own insurance cover. It is up to each individual to ensure that they have adequate insurance.

EU citizens

Health insurance: As an EU citizen, you are usually covered by the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC).
You can find out about additional insurance options from the Austrian Health Insurance Fund (ÖGK).

Liability insurance: Private liability insurance is recommended to cover any damage you may cause unintentionally.

Third-country nationals

Every student must ensure that they have valid health and accident insurance during their stay in Austria. Without valid insurance, you will not receive a visa or residence permit.

One option is self-insurance for students with the Austrian Health Insurance Fund (ÖGK) – gesundheitskasse.at

Alternatively, you can take out private health insurance such as ‘Care Austria’, which is specially designed for international students and recognised by the Austrian authorities.  care-concept.at

Swiss citizens

Students from Switzerland are advised to contact their own health insurance provider. They can provide information about a student’s insurance coverage.

By paying the ÖH contribution, students are insured as ÖH members for certain types of damage.
