Biography

Bonian Tian was born in China, received cello lessons from professor Na Mula and studied with professor David Geringas and professor Frans Helmerson. He has won numerous international cello competitions (including Davidov, George Enescu, André Navarra). Bonian Tian regularly plays at the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival and the Rheingau Music Festival.

He has performed as a soloist with the China Philharmonic, Gürzenich Orchestra Cologne, Kremerata Baltica, Latvian National Orchestra, Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, Beijing Symphony Orchestra, Taiwan National Symphony Orchestra, and Amadeus Orchestra Salzburg. He has given cello recitals at the Berlin Philharmonie, the Vienna Musikverein, the Cologne Philharmonie, the Lincoln Center in New York City, the Tivoli Concert Hall in Copenhagen, the Seoul Centre for Culture and Music, and during a private audience with Queen Margrethe of Denmark.

Bonian Tian has worked with Christoph Eschenbach, Christoph von Dohnanyi, Daniel Barenboim, François-Xavier Roth, Michael Sanderling, Markus Stenz, Sir Neville Marriner, Gidon Kremer, Yuri Bashmet, András Schiff, and Steven Isserlis.

Bonian Tian has been principal cellist in the Gürzenich Orchestra Cologne since January 2010 and has been teaching at the Frankfurt University of Music and Performing Arts since 2011. For this activity, he was awarded the title of professor. Since 2015, he has been a visiting professor at the Central Conservatory of Music Beijing China. Since 2018, he has been an assistant to Frans Helmerson. He regularly gives masterclasses in China, Germany, Italy, the USA, and Switzerland.
