Biography
Heidrun Wirth-Metzler has made a name for herself internationally as a soloist, orchestral musician, lecturer, and concert organiser. Following her time as an academy member of the Munich Philharmonic, she was appointed as principal bassoonist in the Bern Symphony Orchestra (2010-2022). In the same role, she regularly performs with the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich and the Basel Chamber Orchestra, among others. A winner of numerous national and international competitions, she has also appeared as a soloist with the Bruckner Orchestra Linz, the Vorarlberg Symphony Orchestra, and the Niigata Symphony Orchestra. Her special interest in historical performance practice is demonstrated by her concerts in various original sound ensembles and her involvement as co-initiator of the Klang&Raum concert series. As a sought-after lecturer who teaches throughout Europe (including a guest professorship at the University of Applied Sciences in Bern), she has led the bassoon class at Stella Vorarlberg since 2021. Heidrun Wirth-Metzler studied with A. Smith in Vorarlberg and with R. Galler in Vienna, where she passed her final examinations with honours.
