Biography

In addition to his work as a soloist at the Laeizhalle Hamburg and the Berlin Philharmonie, Mathias Johansen is a passionate and versatile chamber musician. He has performed at the Goslar Music Festival, the Zeeland Klassiek Festival (Netherlands), and the ‘Sounding Jerusalem’ festival, as well as at the Philharmonie Luxembourg and as a soloist at the Bregenz Festival. He made his debut at the Schubertiade Hohenems in 2023.
His chamber music partners include Lisa Jacobs, Nora Romanoff-Schwarzberg, Christine Busch, Mayumi Kanagawa, Katya Apekisheva, Dominik Wagner, Eszter Haffner, Patrick Jüdt, Johannes Krebs, Gerhard Vielhaber, Klaus Christa, Andreas Hering, Pawel Zaleyski, Thomas Reif, and Johannes Meissl.
He has been a member of the ‘LightsOut Ensemble’ since 2021, which is currently performing Olivier Messiaen’s Quartet for the End of Time in absolute darkness.
As an enthusiastic teacher, Mathias Johansen has given courses in Austria, Germany, the Netherlands, Iran, Turkey, Poland, and Italy. He is the founder and director of the Streichertage in Feldkirch.
His students have won several prizes at national and international competitions. In the winter semester of 2017/2018, he taught at the Stuttgart University of Music as part of a teaching assignment.
He gained orchestral experience working for several years with the Bavarian Symphony Orchestra under Mariss Jansons, the Staatskapelle Berlin under Daniel Barenboim, and the SWR Radio Symphony Orchestra.
After training with Ekkehard Hessenbruch, he studied with Wen-Sinn Yang and Troels Svane and completed his master’s degree with Frans Helmerson at the Hanns Eisler Academy of Music Berlin. In 2016, he passed his concert exam with Conradin Brotbek at the Stuttgart University of Music with honours.
His CD recordings have been honoured with an ECHO Klassik award, among others.
