Jahrhundert war Improvisation ein fester Bestandteil musikalischer Darbietungen. In der geistlichen und weltlichen Musik benutzte man oft alte einstimmige Melodien, die in handschriftlicher oder gedruckter Form vorlagen. Darauf aufbauend improvisierte man mehrstimmige Ges\u00e4nge. Diese Praktik (auch als \u00abCantare super librum\u00bb, \u00abChanter sur le livre\u00bb, \u00abContrapunto alla Mente\u00bb, oder \u00abExtemporieren\u00bb bezeichnet) entsteht aus dem Augenblick.
